About Me

From elementary school to my doctorate degree, I have always enjoyed reading, writing, researching, and sharing information. My academic interests are centred in the arts and humanities (the math gene went to my brother), and I've been lucky enough to explore many aspects of the discipline throughout the past decade, first in my Honours English BA at Waterloo (2016), then my master’s in Theory and Criticism from Western University (2019), and most recently my PhD in English Rhetoric from the University of Waterloo (2024).

My major areas of interest are rhetoric, communication and media theory,  Frankfurt School critical theory, and critical discourse and text analysis. My current book project combines several of these fields, offering a multimodal investigation of the smartphone as a persuasive agent. Moving beyond traditional rhetorical analyses in or of digital environments, I examine how "smartphone rhetoric" functions on the levels of affordance, infrastructure, and procedure. My goal is to reframe the smartphone as a rhetorical agent in and of itself, not just a tool in the hands of human agents. In doing so, I hope to shed more light on the complex networks of persuasion at play in everyday life.

I have been instructing undergraduate courses since 2022 on topics ranging from academic writing to communication in engineering to the rhetoric of smartphones (a course I designed and taught as part of the Arts First initiative at UW). Now an Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Composition at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Prescott, AZ), I teach courses on introductory composition, technical writing, and advanced communication for capstone courses.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading (surprise!), writing, hiking, crafting, paddleboarding, and spending time with my family. I also do freelance event photography from time to time (which you can view on my "Creativity" page).
